Fortitude Valley State Secondary College (FVSSC) is the Queensland Government's first true vertical school and the first new inner-city Brisbane school in over 60 years. The campus comprises three distinct buildings:
This diverse mix of learning spaces is designed to both accommodate and inspire an ambitious, project-based curriculum that fosters creativity and innovation.
School: All Hallows' School
Project: Potter Building Adaptive Reuse Project
Architect: Fulton Trotter Architects
Photographer: Scott Burrows
The Potter Building is the adaptive reuse of an existing 4 storey building buried in the State Heritage listed All Hallows’ School campus. The addition of a fifth floor, and the lateral extension of the existing floors quadrupled the existing library floor area. All new floor area is cross laminated timber (CLT) slabs on a steel frame. Voids and stairs have been inserted to create interconnecting volumes, weaving the building into a cohesive whole. This facility has provided the school with a sophisticated solution to numerous spatial and circulation issues, and a dynamic learning environment for an evolving curriculum.
School: All Hallows' School
Project: McAuley Hall
Architect: Deicke richards
Photographer: Alanna McTiernan
Built in the late 1950s, McAuley Hall has served many purposes over the decades, adapting to the changing needs of its community. Recently, the hall underwent significant refurbishments and upgrades, completed in 2023, while retaining its heritage character.
The refurbishment introduced 12 contemporary general learning areas, new staff work-spaces and lunch areas, as well as updated amenities for both staff and students. Although primarily designed to support the expanding Year 5 and 6 cohort, the flexible layout allows the spaces to accommodate other year levels as needed.
The interior design draws inspiration from the hall's rich history and the evolving requirements of the school. Robust, consistent and contemporary finishes were carefully selected to honour the heritage of the building while creating inviting spaces for learning, socialising and relaxation. This thoughtful blend of past and present ensures McAuley Hall remains a valuable and inspiring environment for generations to come.
