Dr Bates Gill

Dr Bates Gill has a 30-year global career spanning four continents as an institution-builder, policy advisor, consultant, board director, and author, with a particular focus on Asian and Chinese affairs. 

He has lived and worked for extended periods in Australia, China, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the United States, including as Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)(2007-2012), as the Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (2002-2007), and as a Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies and inaugural Director of the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution (1998-2002).

Among his international honours, Dr Gill holds the Royal Order of the Commander of the Polar Star (post-nominal: KNO), the highest award bestowed upon foreigners by the Swedish monarch, for his contributions to Swedish interests.  Dr Gill is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, serves on the board of the Rajaratnam School of International Studies (Singapore), and is a member of the International Council of Advisors for the Shanghai Institutes of International Studies.

A frequent contributor to print, broadcast and digital media, he is also the author, co-author, or co-editor of eight books and more than 200 other publications.  His most recent book, China Matters: Getting it Right for Australia, was published by Black Inc. in 2017 (co-authored with Linda Jakobson).

In addition to his native (mostly American) English, Dr Gill speaks, reads and writes in French and Chinese and has learned basic Swedish. He earned his Ph.D. in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia.  A million-miler flyer with two airlines, he has travelled to 59 countries with many more to come.

Professor Louise McWhinnie 
Dean, Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation, University Technology Sydney

Professor Louise McWhinnie is the inaugural Dean of the Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation at The University of Technology Sydney, the first new faculty at UTS in two decades. Over the last three decades Louise has lived and worked as an academic in three continents (Australia, Asia and Europe), and in the last decade her research has been conducted within a fourth (America).

Her role as Dean and her focus upon the future of work and the future of education builds upon her contribution to the creation and development of UTS's first transdisciplinary degree program the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation (BCII), which has won national and international awards.

Her teaching and also her integration of research into teaching have earnt Louise national and institutional citations and awards. Over the last decade Louise has delivered presentations, papers, master classes and workshops within Australia, Europe, Asia and America. Louise also writes articles for The Conversation and has undertaken radio and TV interviews in Australia and overseas.

Louka Parry
CEO and Founder, The Learning Future

Louka Parry is the CEO and Founder of The Learning Future, an organisation that supports schools, systems and companies to thrive in tomorrow’s world. A former teacher, he became a school principal at only 27 years old and was named Inspirational Public Secondary Teacher of the Year for South Australia.

He has spent the last five years training thousands of educators and leaders globally (in both English and Spanish)to increase their positive impact and create future-focused learning and positive cultures. He holds two Masters degrees, speaks five languages and is a fellow of Salzburg Global Seminar. He is committed to equipping individuals,schools and organisations for the future of society through enabling a shift towards impactful social, emotional and academic capabilities that enable us to benefit from lifelong and life-wide learning.
