Burnside Primary and Cobham Intermediate School
Architect: Architectus
This project encompasses the two existing schools of Burnside Primary and Cobham Intermediate into a new co-located campus, along with the integration of a special needs satellite facility for Allenvale School. Originally situated at either end of a shared site in the North West of Christchurch, this project brings the schools together into a shared campus while retaining their individual identity and different visions for their learning experiences. Schools are often regarded as central to our society, and this project looks to enable a sense of ownership that fosters this and encourages interaction and participation, not only within the schools but within the wider community.
Christchurch Boys' High School

The Caddick and Caldwell Block development is the most recent addition to the Christchurch Boys High School (CBHS) campus. Both Blocks provide replacements for those of the same name that were irreparably damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. Dedicated to former headmasters, these general and specialist science teaching facilities form a combined 4,880m² area and integrate with the Category 1 heritage-listed Main Block and adjacent Hall, the development frames the central Mihi Whakatau Quad bringing together many distinct site elements.
The educational brief “A modern school with a rich past” was developed at the project's inception sought to resiliently bind evolving pedagogies with the school’s traditions, values, identity, community, and space. Contemporary teaching spaces are arranged along a necklace of new breakout and library spaces that embrace external teaching opportunities through immediate adjacencies to cloistered quadrangles and landscapes. This model has been adapted from the early School’s heritage plan and similarly references the design of CBHS's original school grounds, now The Arts Centre.
